Chapter One
Finding Yourself

With a persocom girl…

Rubbing her prosthetic silver eyes, a robotic girl stretched and blinked twice. She brushed her red hair out of her face and over two white ports similar to Chi’s, except they pressed against her head, and there was light blue on the bottom part and a blue heart replaced the small circle in the middle. She felt her hair and, with a sudden, second nature urge, braided a small crown around her head and over the ports, hiding them so they could no longer be seen. She rose from the cold concrete of the alleyway and brushed off her dress. The top portion was white with light blue triple straps to hold it. Her skirt was a first white layer of lace with a ruffled light blue skirt over it. She was also wearing white tennis shoes with light blue baggy ankle socks over them. There was a charm bracelet on her right arm made with all different stones in varying patterns and colors of blue and white.

She strolled out of the alleyway and down the street, her red hair that went just past her dress blowing gently as she went. She felt many men’s eyes rest on her as she went, making her feel uneasy and awkward. Somebody pinched her as she walked by. She stopped in shock and quickly said,

“Nobody likes a pervert.”

Continuing along, she took in the sights, recording a map of the downtown area before heading out to look around for a job.

She picked up a paper and saw an ad for a bakery job. It said, “Wanted. Able-bodied employee for part-time hours and good pay. Please see following address.”

She recorded the address and located it on her map. She started off towards her destination.

At Hiroyasu Ueda’s bakery…
A small bell jingled as she entered the shop, alerting those inside of her presence. A blonde persocom with white and pink ports walked up to her. She smiled and bowed.

“Hello. My name is Chi. How can I be of service?”

She smiled and bowed back.

“Nice to meet you. My name is Harrah, and I saw the ad for the job in the paper. Is Hiroyasu Ueda here?”

“Yes, could you wait here please?”

The girl walked back behind the counter where all the sweets were stored. Harrah eyed the selection with interest as she patiently waited for her fellow persocom to fetch the storeowner. A tall, blue haired man walked out, wiping his hands of flour with Chi right behind him. He smiled and greeted her.

“Welcome, I understand you are interested in the job opening?”

“Yes, I am.”

“Well, do you have any background work?”

“Background…work…?”

“Yes, have you worked in baking before?”

“No, I don’t think so.”

“Okay, well, I’ll try you and see how you do. Come back tomorrow at eight am, okay?”

“Okay. Goodbye.”

In the suburbs…
It had been a couple of hours since Harrah had been at the bakery, and since then she had contacted an apartment renter and gotten a place to stay. She had purchased some bedding and grooming tools and then a few books and outfits, also some decorating supplies. Running over the address again in her hard drive, she stopped in front of a yellow building with chipping paint. A black haired woman wearing an apron was sweeping the walkway up to it. Harrah walked up to her.

“Excuse me, but are you the landlady of this apartment?”

“Yes, yes I am. You must be the new boarder, Harrah. Come, I’ll show you to your room.”

At the top floor of the apartment building, the woman stopped and opened a door numbered 154. She smiled and said her goodbyes before leaving Harrah to her own devices. Examining the room around her, Harrah took out some paints and began to paint the wall behind the television. She painted a blue sky with white wisps of clouds floating gently past. She continued along the wall, painting a sun peeking up over the dresser. After that was done, she unpacked her clothes and folded them before packing them into the dresser. Placing her books on top of the table, she removed her rolled futon and put it inside the closet, but not before putting the pillows down beside the low table. She pulled out some white curtains with dark blue light shade curtains that could be pulled back to let in the sun. She hung them and pulled both back. Walking over to the TV, she reached into her left port and pulled out a cable. Inserting it into the monitor, she recorded some data and set the email and phone number for her apartment. Removing the cable, she allowed it to slide back inside her port and closed it shut. She replaced the braid over it and stretched. Rubbing her stomach, she wished she could have an egg roll. She wasn’t like your standard persocom, no, she was different. She could feel and think all by herself. True, she was still a robot, but she was as close to humanity as it gets. Being custom made, she had taste sensors and a stomach close to the human thing that processed sugar for energy. Therefore, she was able to eat to gain energy by eating. Her original master and creator had put that special quality into all his persocoms, allowing for them to pass off as humans if left to their own devices. She walked over to the window and took in some solar energy before deciding to go out around town a little more. She had some money, but she did have common sense, so she wasn’t about to spend it all in one place. Walking down to a clothes store first, she picked out some clothes and tried them on, because even though she had clothes, they weren’t plentiful.

First she picked a ruffled white jean skirt, which came to about mid-thigh with a sleeveless white shirt with different shades of blue to white paint splashed on it in the background and writing over it that said, “Look but don’t touch.” She also got a light pink dress (like the one Chi wears later in the series, but with light pink on the stripes instead of white) that she thought was pretty and some ponytail twisties as well as some bandanas and hair clips and a regular jean skirt with a few more tops to go with those. Choosing several pairs of panties, she politely paid and thanked the cashier before leaving for the grocery store.

Later…
Her arms laden down with food and clothes, Harrah walked down the sidewalk towards the building that she now called home. She smiled and said hello to the landlady before heading inside. She struggled up the stairs with her bags, wishing she had bought clothes and groceries at separate times. Panting, she finally came to the top of the stairs and yanked her bags up, preparing to walk down to the end of the hall. As she turned, a boy walked out of his room with Chi, the persocom she had seen in the bakery shop, walking next to him. They were talking and holding hands. Two other mobiles were perched on a shoulder of each. One was a little pink one who was swaying her legs and tapping a tambourine while the other was a blue haired one with bells in her hair. She was shaking her head in shame at the other. Harrah giggled a bit. The four looked at her as she walked past. She stopped and blushed a little.

“Sorry.”

She continued but something on her left shoulder stopped her. The blue haired persocom was sitting there. Harrah looked at her. She looked back.

“Oh, I’m so sorry! I hope she didn’t startle you!”

Harrah turned around. The boy and persocoms she had walked past were standing there. Harrah smiled and tilted her head to the side.

“It’s fine.”

The little pink persocom started tapping her tambourine and dancing.

“Kotoko, you need to come back with Sumomo!” she said happily as she danced. Harrah looked at her strangely. She looked down at Kotoko.

“What is she, gay?”

Kotoko looked at her with disbelief.

“Finally, somebody else gets it!” She then turned to the boy. “Oh, please, please Hideki, let me stay with this master who understands life!” she pleaded. Hideki looked at her and rolled her eyes.

“Okay, fine. Just don’t go getting yourself in trouble, okay?”

Kotoko smiled and collapsed back onto Harrah’s shoulder. She looked at Harrah and beamed.

“Finally, I didn’t think I would ever get out of that nutcase.”

Harrah giggled before looking back to Hideki, Sumomo and Chi. Chi smiled at Harrah and took a couple of her bags.

“Harrah, friend.”

Harrah smiled back and then turned to Hideki, who was looking a little confused.

“Have you two met before?”

“Yeah, I met Chi when I was looking at a job offer at Hiroyasu’s bakery. Do you mind that I’m pretty much taking Kotoko from you?”

“I don’t mind!” Kotoko chirped.

“I can see that, but I feel a little guilty about just taking someone without asking first or being offered! Problem with that?”

“No, but I’m HAPPY to escape that house of whack jobs. I wasn’t even his in the first place.”

This startled Harrah.

“Wait, you weren’t his in the first place?”

“She was forced to come with me after an incident with her owner.” Hideki explained. Harrah nodded understandably. That was reasonable. Sometimes when things happened, persocoms were switched custodies for evidence and trial purposes. She bowed to Hideki.

“I’m Harrah, nice to meet you. My room’s a little ways down the hall, and I doubt Chi’s going to let me have those bags back without her helping me with them.” She said politely. Turning, she walked down the hall, chatting with Kotoko and getting to know her new friend a little more. Apparently Kotoko’s old master had custom made Kotoko and was a notorious online hacker. After he had kidnapped Chi to examine her, Hideki, Sumomo and his friend, Shinbo had had to track him down and he had been found guilty of the crime. Kotoko had then been placed in Hideki’s custody and had not enjoyed it. Harrah recorded this conversation and stored it in her memory drive, knowing this would be something she would need to know. They walked into her room and Harrah let Kotoko down on the dresser. Hideki, Sumomo and Chi said their goodbyes and left. Kotoko insisted she wanted to do something, so Harrah picked up the bags of food and put them inside the pantry. She told Kotoko to just unpack everything, and if she finished that, she could organize them. Harrah walked back over to the dresser and folded the clothes, breaking off the tags as she heard Kotoko rattling around in the pantry. She pulled open the drawers and organized everything. The rattling in the pantry stopped and Harrah heard Kotoko jump down onto the floor. She closed the last drawer and turned around as Kotoko clambered up onto her shoulder.

“All done, master!” the small mobile said brightly. Harrah walked over to the pantry and looked inside. All the food was arranged neatly, and the fridge was organized properly too. Harrah beamed and pat Kotoko on the head.

“Nice job, Kotoko! That’ll make things easier!” she said brightly, pulling some noodles and a stir fryer out of the pantry. Greasing the fryer with oil, she poured some pea pods into it. They began to simmer as she took out some onions and carrots. She chopped the carrots and added the strips to the pan. The diced onions soon followed them. Putting a pot of water on the stove to boil, Harrah turned her attention back to the vegetables. She added curry powder and some other spices. Scraping some off the sides, she flipped it around a bit before resuming the stirring. She glanced over at the water and added the noodles to the boiling pot. A few minutes later, rice noodles were poured into the whole combination. Harrah turned the stove off and put the stir fryer and pot into the sink and filled them with water, but not before pouring what was left of the food into a small container and covering it with plastic wrap. She sat down at the table on a pillow to eat her meal. As she ate, she continued chatting with Kotoko. When dinner was finished, Harrah cleared the plates and the two washed the dishes. Kotoko was using a scrub brush twice as large as she was to take the food off the plates. She ended up falling into the sink and Harrah laughed before fishing her out and drying her off. Kotoko’s hair got frizzy, so she rubbed a little conditioner into it. She pouted as Harrah did this. Harrah yawned and glanced at the clock. It read 10 pm. She put Kotoko back up on her shoulder and got out her futon. She laid it on the floor as Kotoko dragged a pillow over from the table. Harrah grabbed the other and placed it beside the one Kotoko was sitting on. She set her internal alarm before shutting down to rest and regain energy. She drifted into slumber.
